Art Basel - HK

So Art Basel HK has officially started and last night the festivities kicked off with many of the galleries around town opening their doors for cocktails and invitation-only viewings. At the same time, the streets of Central were packed with glamorously dressed women wearing sky high heels holding oversized clutches while the men looked dapper and stylish. To tell you the truth, Queen's Road Central looked more like a scene out of New York fashion week than a typical night in Hong Kong.

Despite the dreadful rainy weather, I was lucky enough to stay dry and make a visit to see two collections by famous artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Marc Chagall. First stop was Basquiat's exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Pedder Building. Getting into the building was a feat in itself as the queues were long and that was just to get into a lift! Obviously the building management had planned for this and the staff were graciously handing out bottles of ice cold water while outdoor fans kept guests cool from the intense humidity and heat. Anyway, my wait was short and I was quickly whisked up to the 7th floor to see the exhibition. Most of Basquiat's paintings on show are painted on huge canvases and unless you are lucky enough to have a space that has massive walls and high ceilings, it would be hard to fit one of these beautiful pieces of artwork in your home, especially in Hong Kong.

Anyway, here are just part of the paintings on exhibition:

I love the fact that this painting uses minimal colour and focuses on images.

I "heart" skulls!

I'm thinking Basquiat meant Pattaya, Thailand?!

You can never go wrong with black and white!

The second and last stop of the evening was the "Marc Chagall: A vision in my dream" exhibition at the Opera Gallery. Beautiful Chagall oil paintings and lithographs in guilded gold frames filled two floors of the gallery, definitely not to be missed if you are a fan. However, if you don't have time or are too lazy to see the exhibition in person you can view some of the paintings on display through the website http://www.operagallery.com/ang/event/?art=123&

Happy Art Baseling!!
